Authete is a space for play and experiment where we can create on our own terms,
for the simple joy of making.
Authete is a philosophy, a marrying of the powerful values expressed in it’s parent names,
authentic + aesthete.
Our studio stands for a utilitarian quality not just in physical value, with well made seams and strong buckles, but in its visceral and intangible value that products crafted only from truly modest origins can be attested. Authete is for products with purpose, that highlight wholesome living and support the wellbeing of crafters.
Authete is not for placing things away in the cupboard waiting on special occasions,
Authete is for everyday.
I wrote this as a student of Industrial Design and it still rings ever true to me many years later:
'by making our necessities, such as chairs, utensils, lights, doors and their handles, not only functional, sustainable, long lasting and economical but also beautiful, we will no longer feel so inclined to buy so many purely ornate and functionless objects that are a huge part of todays 'throw away' society. If our staples are in themselves artful.'
